Remagen AAR 1660 US 1ID versus 1645 SS-panzerbrigade Westfalen.

So, in the sleeping wintery village somewhere in Russia, the weary remnants of SS-panzerbrigade Westfalen with support from rather Fearless and quick pair of King Tigers are enjoying a break.

They get suddenly thrown into battle by 1 US ID arriving on a spur of the moment attack. (Hasty attack.)

I had real doubts on how to deploy the halfs on this one. In the end I decided on having the Ostwinds and the 2 Westfalen infantry platoons, another one in Immediate Ambush. My opponent deployed 1 Rifle platoon, 105mms, the 6 priests and 1 Cav recce. He rolled reserves and got his first right away, he took the 4.2" mortars.

In the first round I shot down the AOP which was foolishly put into range from all of my Ostwinds. TBH there wasn't too many hiding places there so he just took the gamble, even though I did warn about it. Still, the AOP is more useful in scenarios bit different from HA.

I generally stayed put, and he maneuvered aggressively towards an objective, the Priests formed a Gunline, and were shot to pieces by couple of faust traps and the Ostwinds. US got all of it's reserves in 4 turns :D. I got 2 platoons on the second reserve roll. Mortars and KT's, middle and wrong side.

KT's killed a Sherman a turn, while moving towards the objective.

US rifles that were at half 6 teams total, assaulted my pinned platoon, that had 2iC and Cic in tow, total 9 teams I think. After 5 rounds of combat, I had 2 HMGs left and the burly 1ID guys had 3 teams still. Grrr, well that's the breaks.

There was one bailed Ostwind in the proximity, which the US boys destroy in the process, triggering a reluctant platoon check, which I fail. Next turn I get Nebs on the corner been attacked, and the Neb Command team buys time, again the US guys assault, this time with 3 teams, after DF there's 2 teams assaulting a neb, I fail the reluctant counter attack roll, which leads the guns dead, further platoon check and the Neb platoon is gone.

The 12" a turn moving KT's arrive JIT to contest the objective.

Time out and 4-3 for Westfalen.

My new friend gave a helluva fight to me, while in the end the 2 KT's schnelling from the far side, made it just in time to contest the objective, we'd agreed a time limit for this, and played 7 turns so not that bad. If it had gone a while longer I'd probably lost, CiC and 2iC gone in the assault, and 3 platoons left, the mortars were not dug in, so possible morale loss. He still had 1 full Infantry platoon and 105mm, chem mortars, 60mm mortars, couple of cav recon patrols and stuff left, so unlikely for me to have won that battle.

And he did make mistakes, I easily shot down the AOP, and trapped/Ostwinded the Priests. But assault from half a platoon of US rifles beat easily my 7 or so FT Westfalen boys. I managed to whiff 2 rounds of assault, which helped :). 2 HMG's left, 2 2+ rolls, If I'd made them, the 2 HMG's would have ripped the rifles to shreds = roll of 1, ETW and automatic failure on last man standing.

My thoughts:
Hasty attack is a beast to defend with 6 platoons versus Tube heavy US CV rifles list, Ostwinds were golden though, but I kinda had to have infantry on board, although the KT's might have been a better choice, the FJ player in me couldn't resist. Trained is hard, RV is best there is, I really love the RV given best of both worlds aspect on tanks. Better than FV King tigers for 300 points :D. Since I'm into attacking and all things tracked nowish, I don't think I'll continue practicing too much with this, though I do think it has potential. My list lacks THE AMBUSH platoon as well.

Few pics, lot of proxies, some unpainted stuff as well, been busy with terrain lately, so getting there. I ordered some 4Ground buildings to better go with the NW Europe we plan on fighting over, Brit Paras, US Infantry/tanks and my myriad of German Panzer/Mech/Infantry. I'm leaning towards running panzers though, I find that a lot more enjoyable than sitting in defense...

FNG part 2 - US Paras need some TLC and list improvement.

Garage mayhem continues and played against my new favorite opponent in learning and his Paras.

This time it was a lesson in speed and ambush mitigation. Brutal 6-1 for my panzerspah. FV Paras left hanging, the arty destroyed very early, no reserves arriving, in general a bad day for the Paratroopers. We had a good and thorough debriefing after  the game and hopefully it was lesson learned about putting infantry next to roads and how to mitigate the recce moves, I was in online meeting while he set-up those troops so didn't have chance to let him know what's not good idea, the mission was no retreat and we played with 1270 point forces. Now I didn't have any StuHs, only panthers, 2 nebs, Pumas and Pz Lehr platoon, so not necessarily the best list either against veteran infantry, but when that infantry doesn't connect with anything, it's moot point.

Well, next time he wants to attack, so I will play mine infantry against the Paras... I really fear that if he doesn't win in near future, he won't have fun anymore, and I'm getting better also, with game every week or two. Need to get more people so we could have game with 2 vs 2 or maybe noob vs noob. I'm been thinking also about creating a bad list for me. :)

As for any noob winning with OP US forces, it doesn't work like that. And I don't think AOP is needed with US Paras, he doesn't have that and there are more than enough PL's who can call the Arty. My other friend has bit more experience and will bring the British paras to the party, so at least I'm practicing against the really hard defensive lists as it is.

Give me ideas for US Paras at 1250 points and 1500 points, for a list I could suggest to him. I wouldn't necessarily start with TD's as they do require more than little skill to utilize well. He really wants to learn how to attack, so preferred lists would have attacking power.

Edit. Decided to play 1500 lists next, I'm gonna run FJ pioneers, which although are beasts defending versus tanks, kinda suck as they are so pricy. This should give him the numbers and we'll see. The guys don't believe in mortars, so I'm gonna show some mortar-love with the 10,5cm ones.

FNG - Friend lured into the Game with US paras.

Have been playing lately in my Garage. And against my old friend and his US Para lists. First game we did, was 1000 points or so, with Pumas vs. them. Free for All or something like that. 5-2 for me. Next one was 1250 with DM Panzers attacking in Hold the Line, 6-1. Last one was DM Panzergrens attacking in No retreat, 4-3 with me having 1 panther, nebs and 2 1-car recon platoons left.

His getting better, and so am I, it's fun to try new lists with I don't have experience and see him getting the Paras going, next game he wants to attack, so it's time for FJ's, I thought about having something with CT, but I think it's better to have about same number of teams.

Life is good, with game every week now :) Also, the 1250 points is nice for new guy, still the game takes 3-4 hours about, but can only hope they go faster with experience.

Garage days update

Hah, now I've got a gaming table, and in a few weeks, probably some decent terrain as well, although getting Boston terrier puppy on Saturday might mean some time goes for him. Children have decided he's gonna be called Hulk, so figure that will stick.

Had a new disciple recruited as well, to have a game of FFA with my Pumanas' and my Fallschirmjägers proxying US Paratroopers. The game took forever, as the first games tend to take, but now we have new player, he send me message about buying already US Para Company ;)

Pumas are something else,  they are fragile, have good gun and can't move in woods... But they are cheap, you can have lots of them, and StuH42 is bloody good tank in this game...

I'm gonna try out a 13 Pumas, 4 StuHs, Nebs and Stukas in a 1250 tournament I think. Just to get a real feel of the kittens.

Putting some speed to my forces after slugging with infantry for so long feel like therapy...

KG Peiper vs. French Tanks ~1000 points

Had a friendly game few weeks ago against pretty new player, who had only French PJ Shermans in his list, 12 in total. Sorry no Pics.

I had 1 plus 4 PzIVJs, 3 Panthers and 3 Pumas.

We rolled for Counterattack, and since we both were AA lists, we rolled and I got to defend...

With 3 Platoons, it was CiC PZIVJ and ambushing Panthers on the field, should have had the Panzers in ambush rather, as it was problematic to get them from reserves later.

He put 1 Platoon forwarder to the obj, and another, with HQ tanks to take mine reserves, which was good idea.

He had nothing that could kill my Panthers, so in the end, it was just up to cats to kill everything, after he had killed my Pumas and Panzers ;)

I have zero experience with tanks, except how to kill them with infantry, so this was lesson for me, and when your opponent needs 3+ to hit your tanks, it's not very funny ;)

With Puma's I was too aggressive... But that's how you learn stuff..

I hope Iron guinea pig also learned something, direct smoke is ok, but if you can't get behind the Panther's, they will rip apart general Shermans any day, Trained or not.

Preparation game vs. Hungarian HBG list from hell :) Pics and thoughts... Not a proper AAR

Sorry not a proper AAR at all, just wanted to share my thoughts after meeting the worst thing I could imagine, and surviving... well almost, fearless isn't...

Had a list from BBB with VDH all the traps, Stuhs, 88's(my first time with these and lost them without firing them at all...) , Pak40s, mortars, no 'real' artillery and short scouts with PzF

OpFor was 10 Zrinyi II's (Hungarian StuH with HBG), 3 panthers, pioneers, nebs, Toldi recce tanks and nebs.

We chose to play the Breakthrough as I haven't really played that before. The game proceeded very quickly, and ended on round 8 or 9 when Vdh rolled 1 for company morale, Hungarians having passed theirs before...

I really feel this list can win vs. anybody given the player(me..) is up to his game... I would not play this kind of list if the scoring was done BF style only, but with the upcoming ETC, the winning is more important.

Setting Up the factory did not block LOS, my bad placement of 88s seen below...

Finally got a proper Feldherr backpack with right sized slots...

FJ 1 ready to move to seize the objectives. Mortars seen behind them.

FJ 2 with it's attached stummel, holding the another flank with Paks.

Recon move.

Nebs, blissfully unaware of the fanatical faustmen, Eric and Karl, ready to drive them off the table...
Reserves of the Hungarian, they did not fare so well after entering..

Perceptions of the units:

The trap teams were wonderful again in directing and delaying the enemy, one trap team eliminated the nebs in first 3 turns...

88's got smoked, then killed by the HBGs, Vdh resurrected one, these I need to think again, how to use them successfully.

StuHs were not stars here, but they forced the enemy to move the longer way.

The Recon caused trouble for the enemy by having that Faust and being a buffer for possible infantry early attack through woods, these I think will be useful.

Paks I really like, they were not stars of the game, but really forced the enemy movement again.

FJ with Schrecks and Fausts is the bomb, pure staying power and willingness to assault tanks... :)

Stummels were essential in keeping the enemy's no save guns to minimum fire.

1780 LW Cassino FJ vs. Harckocsizo Szazad

In order to practice a bit and also have a go at ETC-tournament qualifier lists, me and Aleksis played Encounter on a table with lots of terrain. The larger wooded areas were normal forests that block los and are difficult terrain, smaller woods provided concealment for all, hedges concealment for infantry only.

The lists were.

UNITS IN RESERVE
Harckocsizo Szazad
  • Light Harckocsizoi Platoon - 1x Command Toldi II, 3x Toldi II (155 pts)
  • 3x 15cm NW41 rocket launcher (85 pts) (CT)
  • Harckocsizoi Platoon - 1x Command Panther A, 1x Panther A (365 pts)

  • Fallschirmjäger Mortar Platoon - 2 8cm GW42
  • Fallschirmjäger Tank-hunter Platoon- 4 Marder II
  • 3x 15cm NW41 rocket launcher

DEPLOYMENT SUMMARY
Harckocsizo Szazad: The hungarians won the roll to choose side, and chose the left. The objectives were placed. And tyhe pioneers started on the far right, on the objective. The Zrinyi and tigers took the middle.
Monte Cassino 1.fjd: I made a mistake on setting my objective on the hungarians far right allowing for his few teams to control both... You live you learn, then again the hungarian's only target of offensive was the Toldi platoon snatching objective.

TURN 1

Turns 1-3

The Fj maneuver into the buildings while Stugs try to get the Zrinyi while avoiding the Tigers.
Stugs play cat and mouse with the tigers, the FJ platoon moves to town.

The Fj platoon moves forward, to cut the route of the tanks and to allow for assault in case the opportunity should arise.

Tigers get smoked every turn, Stugs get killed, Panther leader killed by nebs, marders arrive and help kill the Zrinyi.

Before they get killed by the combined fire from the Tigers and Nebs

The reserves arrive on the wrong side for the tanks. I forgot to take any more pictures as we were timing the game as well, on the last turn I managed to Kill 1 tiger, assault the second , which failed the roll to counteratack and ran away. Then I bombarded the Panther, shot it with a schreck, but all in vain. The total score was 3-2 for Hungarians, with the Stugs and Marders killed and Zrynyis on his side. All in all, would've been a better game had I put the objective on the far side, as the Hungarians stayed on the same spot for the whole game, and I really didn't have the possibility of attacking either objective. Had I put the objective elsewhere, I could've overloaded the defenders there, just didn't think it through, now I know and will be doing this differently the next time.

      EDIT:
We played this a bit wrong as I deployed the fortifications from the Supply Truck while the mission does not have prepared positions rule.
